Your Emergency Dentist In Woodbridge VA
Even if you conscientiously you care for your teeth, a dental problem can occur. Similar to any other emergency, dental issues don’t always happen at a convenient time.
Emergency dental work is needed to relieve you from pain and possible complications. When you’re in pain, we’ll make sure that you’re treated as soon as possible.
At Lake Ridge Smiles, our practice is happy to serve you if you’re having a dental emergency, whether you’re a current or a new patient. It’s important to know what to do when a dental emergency occurs, and to have a dentist who is there when emergency care is needed. If you have a toothache or chipped tooth or any other dental emergency, we will relieve the pain and discuss the steps for treatment.
What is a Dental Emergency?
Dental emergencies typically happen as a result of two instances, as follows:
- In some cases, you may fall and break a tooth or knock it out; or
- You have severe toothache or sudden, unexpected swelling of the mouth, face, or neck.
Both conditions can be quite painful. You need help. Lake Ridge Smiles understands that, so please don’t hesitate to call. We arrange our daily appointment schedule to accommodate patient emergencies during regular hours. Simply put – when you need us, we will fit you in! If that injury, sudden swelling, or pain occurs after hours, just call the office.
What Dental Emergencies Require Immediate Attention?
- Severe pain: Intense toothache that interferes with sleep and daily activities
- Knocked-out tooth: A tooth that has been completely dislodged from its socket.
- Uncontrolled mouth bleeding: Bleeding from the mouth that doesn’t stop after applying pressure.
- Injuries: Any cracks, fractures, or other damage to teeth, gums, or the jaw.
- Swelling: Rapidly increasing swelling in the face or neck, especially if accompanied by difficulty breathing or swallowing.
- Lost fillings or crowns: While not always a dental emergency, significant discomfort or pain from a lost filling or crown may require immediate attention from your dentist.
What Should I Do if I have a Dental Emergency?
- Call our office immediately. If our office is closed, leave us an emergency message.
- Control any bleeding: apply pressure to the area with a clean gauze pad.
- Manage pain: try using over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen (don’t use aspirin directly on your tooth).
- If the tooth is knocked-out, here are some things you should do: Try to rinse the tooth gently without scrubbing and reinsert it in the socket. If you cannot reinsert the tooth into the socket to keep it inside your mouth, you need to keep it moist (in milk or your saliva) until you can see a dentist.
- When to Call 911 or go to the nearest ER: If you are experiencing severe symptoms like difficulty breathing, excessive bleeding, or significant facial trauma, call 911 or go to the nearest Emergency Room.
